Brevard: Florida's redfish capital

Redfish areas

Brevard County offers some of the best redfish fishing in Florida, especially for trophy-sized
redfish. Redfish can be caught throughout the Indian River Lagoon system, but some areas hold greater numbers of the gamefish.

and David Wiggins are common catches in Brevard
County waters.  It's no wonder that Brevard is
known as the Redfish Capital of Florida.  They
took their memorable catch in the Cocoa Beach area
of the Banana River.  Both redfish were released.

Sportfishing craze brings area new title

When David Wiggins recently spent a week in Cocoa visiting his father, David said his vacation wouldn't be complete without catching a heavyweight redfish.

Like thousands of others around the country, Wiggins had heard about the exceptional sportfishing for redfish in Brevard County.   Being a professional fly fishing guide an instructor at Callaway Gardens near his Pine Mountain, Ga., home, Wiggins is one who appreciates premier fishing.

As a treat for his son, Jay Wiggins chartered a day of fishing with Capt. Shawn Foster, a veteran river guide from Cocoa Beach who specializes in leading his clients to trophy redfish.

Foster took the Wiggins to the Thousand Island area of the Banana River near Cocoa Beach where they caught and released more than a cozen redfish.   But "the icing on the cake," as Jay put it, came near the end of the day when David and Jay each hooked big redfish within moments of each other.  Jay fought his 35-pounder to the boat on spinning gear, and David landed his fish, of almost identical size, on a fly rod.
